The Forum on Geography and Ecological Sustainability was held at JNU from Feb. 17 to 19. It was co-sponsored by Yang Xiaojun, a tenured professor from Florida State University and visiting professor at JNU, and Prof. Jiang Shijun of JNU, who have maintained close contact and cooperation for many years, jointly studying the impact of land use change on ecosystems.
Experts and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Key Laboratory, Shanxi University, Sun Yat-sen University, the Guangzhou Institute of Geography and the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Environment gathered to discuss related problems in geography and ecological sustainability. Also present were reporters from China Environmental News and Environmental Magazine, as well as and teachers and students from JNU's School of Groundwater, Earth and Life Science.
Topics included core geography concepts and ecological sustainability theories, remote sensing and geospatial technologies for ecological sustainability research, challenges in ecologically sustainable development, planning and policy on sustainability of ecosystems, and sustainable development. In addition, the meeting organized participants to launch field investigations of water pollution from Dabaoshan mine tailings and the Chebaling national nature reserve.
