JNU held an international symposium on "Globalization: Challenges for Translators and Interpreters" on its Zhuhai campus from Oct. 27 to 29. More than 200 experts from Britain, the United States, Spain, the Netherlands and China attended. The event was part of JNU's "Building a High-Level University" program and its 110th-anniversary celebration.

The symposium had several themes, including translation and interpretation theory and practice; quality assessment; teaching studies; and translator and interpreter training. It featured keynote speeches by eight scholars on Oct. 28 and six parallel sessions the next day. The attendees had lively discussions with the experts on "Applied Translation and Its Prospects," "Cultural Power in Translation," "Term Translation and Its Structure Building," "Translation Criticism and Theory" and "Teaching Translation."

At the opening ceremony, JNU Vice President Liu Jiesheng introduced to the guests and scholars the university's disciplines, majors and campuses, especially the School of Translation Studies' achievements in developing the subject, faculty and students. Five of the school's projects on "Translating Chinese Art History into English" have been funded as part of the National Social Science Projects in the last three years. Its students have taken the Tests for English Majors Level 4 and Level 8 with high passing scores, and won awards in major translation contests including the Han Suyin Translation Contest.

After Liu's speech, the school announced the appointment of two visiting professors: Li Defeng from the University of Macau and Mark Williams from the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Liu issued them letters of appointment.
