Cheng Guobin, dean of JNU's College of Arts, has become its first chair professor in the Yangtze River Scholars Program. He was on the List of Yangtze River Scholars in 2015 issued by the Ministry of Education at the beginning of 2016, and in July he was selected as the leading figure in philosophy and social science in the National Program with Special Support for High-level Talents. He has also been awarded titles by the Program With National Support for Top Talents in the New Century, the Guangdong Pearl River Scholars Program, the Thousands of Talents Program and Cultural Celebrities in 2015, issued by the Central Publicity Department.
Cheng has worked at JNU for over 20 years since earning his doctorate from Nanjing University. Dedicated to ancient Chinese culture, he has published more than 10 academic monographs and 140 papers in that time. Fu Xuancong, a famous scholar, wrote the preface to Cheng’s book Cultural Interpretation of Novels in Tang and Five Dynasties(2002), in which he spoke highly of Cheng's dedication and diligence. "Cheng shows innovation and devotion in the younger generation in seeking knowledge," Fu wrote. "He is so keen on studying Tang Dynasty novels that he forgets the bustling metropolis he lives in."
