Prof. Zheng Weiyi was invited back to Jinan University in May to give a lecture on his experience in US in a series organized by College of Science and Engineering, Research Institute of Food Security and Nutrition Study. He was hired as part-time professor of Jinan University.
Zheng, afamous alumnus of Jinan University,was selected as one of the high-level talents in the Thousand Talents Program in 2012. He was born in 1952. Zheng was enrolled at JNU as an undergraduate in 1982, and later enrolled as a recommended graduate in the Joint Education Program of JNU- Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1986. After graduation, he worked for several years before earning his doctorate in the United States.
He became involved in studying and producing an orphan drug (a specific drug to rare diseases). He also launched the first Chinese forum of orphan drug research and established a Chinese orphan drug innovation league by appealing to China to enact law in China and to give official definition to rare diseases.
Zheng recalled his days at Jinan University, full of gratitude and satisfaction for what he has learned in Jinan University. As the winds of reform and open policy blew in South Guangdong during JNU's early period of reconstruction, he said, the cultural air of free and democracy greatly impressed.
Prof. Zheng expressed his best wishes to Jinan University on its 110th anniversary and said he hoped JNU would exert more effect as a place for overseas Chinese to cultivate practical talents.
