Three hundred district councilors from 18 constituencies issued a joint declaration on November 11 supporting the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress interpretation of the 104th article of the Basic Law of Hong Kong, curbing the spread of Hong Kong independence speech and attracting worldwide attention. Most of the district councilors graduated from Jinan University.
Jinan University is closely bound to Hong Kong. JNU was re-established in Guangzhou in 1978 when students from Hong Kong started to study north of Hong Kong. Jinan University became the school that received the largest number of Hong Kong students and earned respect the same as Hong Kong university on the mainland. Nowadays JNU alumni including Ian Fok, honorary president of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong; Ceng Xianzi, vice chairman of the board of directors of Jinan University; and Yu Chunguo, a famous Hong Kong industrialist, play a significant role in Hong Kong. In addition, 6,000 alumni have contributed to China in fields including politics, business, media and medicine. Over 400 have worked in journalism and over 2,000 in the police.
JNU people support and guard the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong. Last year, 14 alumni were elected district councilors.
On Feb. 23, 2003, Kwong Wah Hospital received a mainland patient who had pneumonia. Dr. Zhang Hanming found that his disease was caused by the malignant pathogen SARS and demanded that the patient immediately be treated in isolation. At that moment, Hong Kong began the fight against SARS.
Luo Jingcheng, chairman of Qing-Yi Residents' Association, organized dozens of citizens in Hong Kong on June 30, 1997, to welcome the Chinese People's Liberation Army to Hong Kong in heavy rain.
In 1994, Zheng Yaotang, a member of Hong Kong's Legislative Council of Hong Kong, proposed to abolish the electoral arrangements for the last British Legislative Council, decided by the British government alone. The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress supported his proposal.
All three are alumni of Jinan University, whose graduates in Hong Kong support the "one country, two systems" policy, guarding the stability and building prosperity in Hong Kong.
