The Chinese Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the Jinan University-University of Birmingham Joint Institute at Jinan University in September. It will be JNU’s first joint international education institute.
The institute will admit its first cohort of students in September 2017, with an eventual total enrollment of 1,200 students. Students will be based on JNU’s south campus in Pan Yu.The institute will initially focus on degree programs in mathematics, mathematics with information computing, economics with statistics, and economics, all taught in English. On successful completion, graduates will be awarded bachelor’s degrees from both universities.
The institute will focus mainly science and technology and interdisciplinary majors while introducing the University of Birmingham’s course systemand teachers. It will integrate resources from both universities to nurture talent in mathematics, program design, statistics, economics and finance with sound mathematical knowledge, excellent English and an international perspective. Graduates should be able to serve Guangdong province well and meet the demands of reform in opening up and economic and social development.
Founded in 1900, the University of Birmingham is one of the UK’s six famous “red-brick universities,” as well as the member of the Russell Group, the British Ivy League.
