The symposium “Hong Kong, Macao & Maritime silk road in Global Perspective” was held in our university on December 5th. The symposium was undertaken jointly by Jinan University Hong Kong & Macao Historic and Cultural Research Center, Guangdong People Publishing House, etc. More than 30 scholars from Beijing, Nanjing, Hong Kong, Macao, United States and Guangzhou attended the symposium.
Several very important guest were also invited to the forum, and they were Professor Kendall Johnson, and Professor Li Depei from University of Hong Kong, Professor Lu Longguang from Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Liu Shuyong from Lingnam University of Hong Kong, Professor Mo Shixiang from Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Professor Tang Kaijian from University of Macau etc.
Professor Zhang Ronghua, vice president of our university said while delivering a speech that “The Belt and The Road” concept was warmly applaused by all circles since it was raised. That our university’s pushing forward research on Hong Kong and Macao history was our important measure of pushing forward the concept.
The symposium consisted of five panels, including “Spatial Foundation of Marine Commerce Network of Macao and Hong Kong”, “Marine Trade and Economic Transition of Macao and Hong Kong”, “Social Changes of Hong Kong and Macao vs Marine Trade”, “The spread &Influence of Western Religion in Hong Kong, Macao”, “Cultural Exchanges between the east and the West via Marine Trade”.
Scholars attending the symposium sheded new lights on the study of marine silk road, and some of the new ideas were far cry from traditional ones. They penetrated into the history of Hong Kong and that of Macao, and had analysis to Guangdong-Hong Kong- Macao relationship on a new level.
