ABOUT Cao Jun
Graduated from Wuhan University in 1993 and received his doctor degree from IHEPCAS in 1998, Cao Jun is now a research at the Institute of High Energy Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences(IHEPCAS). He once took part in the experiments of H1 at DESY and experiments of MinibooNE neutrion at the Fermilab. In 2003, Cao started his research on neutrino in reactors at the Daya Bay laboratory, working as the vice project manager, and found out about neutrino oscillation through physical analysis. Now Cao Jun is the Chinese spokesman of the Daya Bay experiment international cooperation division, standing vice manager of Jiangmen neutrino experiment project, as well as the vice spokesman of its international cooperation division. In 2004, Cao was selected a member of Hundred Talents Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2012, Cao was awarded the national science fund for distinguished young scholars. In 2016, he became a leading talent of scientific innovation of the national Thousands Talents Plan. Moreover, Cao Jun received several influential awards in the science field and made reports in international conference of physics.
Abstract:
Neutrinos are the most mysterious basic particles to human knowledge, yet they play an important role from the most microscopic particle physics to the most macroscopic cosmology. In the 2016 National Science and Technology Awards granting conference, the Daya Bay neutrino experiment won the first prize for its tremendous contribution to the particle physics research in China. The experiment filled the blank of China's research in this field, improving Chinese physicists' global influence.
Cao Jun began his experiment of neutrinos in reactors since late 2003, and later was in charge of the conceptual design and engineering design of physical and software system, and central detector. He was appointed the head of the Daya Bay experiments. Generally, he would be addressed as the speaker.
Throughout the whole Paiya mountain tunnel at the Daya Bay with a length over 3 kilometers, 3 connecting underground screening-room sized laboratories were set up accommodating 8 neutrino detectors. Wrapped with stainless crust, the detectors were cylinders, with a diameter of 5 meters and a height of 5 meters. And inside them were transparent liquid scintillator.
It was right in these laboratories, after fighting with neutrinos for over 1600 days and nights, Cao Jun and the Daya Bay experiment international cooperative team published their findings of the third type of oscillation. Described with measurement of θ13, the value was calculated to be 0.092, with an error value of 0.017. This is the first time that a Chinese laboratory measured out a basic physical parameter value.
On the same day, Nobel prize winner Li Zhengdao sent his congregations and remarked that this is an achievement of fundamental importance. This report will mainly focus on the latest findings of research on neutrino experiments and neutrino research in China.
