Academic lecture of Department of Physics, College Science & Engineering (No.33)

Academic lecture of Department of Physics, College Science & Engineering (No.33)

Topic: Dimension Theory and its Huge Power
Date: May 6, 2018
Time: 19:00 p.m.
Venue: Room A206, Fuli building
Speaker: Liang Canbing, Beijing Normal University

Abstract:
Prof. Liang interested in dimensional issues since 1956. After 61 years’ research, he eventually achieved a lot in dimensional analysis, the semi-virgin land to be exploited. The dimensional analysis, widely used, usually applies to checking equation. However, to check equation is just the tip of iceberg of dimensional analysis applications, among which are pinned by P theory. Using the P theory, the Pythagorean theorem can be proved in a few steps and the energy released by the first atomic bomb (a true story at the end of the World War II) can be estimated just by a picture. The first part of this lecture will teach basic knowledge, and the second part the proof of the P theory. In addition, the lecture will show you how to prove the Pythagorean theorem and estimate the energy of the atomic bomb ingeniously.

About Liang Canbin
Prof. Liang Canbin was born in Zhongshan County, Guangdong Province in January, 1938 and moved to Macao with his parents four months later. He studied in Guangdong Guangya High School from 1952 to 1955. In 1955, he was admitted to the Department of Physics, Beijing Normal University. Graduated in 1959, he stayed in the Department of Physics, Beijing Normal University as a teacher.  He was a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago in the United States from 1981 to 1983. After returning to China, he devoted to basic courses, professional courses and scientific research. Since 1986, he served as professor and then a Ph.D. Supervisor. After his retirement in 1999, he was invited to give lectures in Beijing Normal University, Tsinghua University, school of Mathematical sciences and Graduate School of University of Chinese Academy of Science and other universities and high schools.

He has written 10 books, published 54 research papers and 15 teaching and research papers. His main awards include the first national special award of excellent teaching achievement (1989), first Prize of teacher award of Zeng Xianzi Education Foundation (1993), and the special award for excellent teachers of Baosteel Education Foundation (2000).
