He joined JNU and set up New Energy Technology Research Institute in August 2016. Prof. Mai has been devoted into the study of photovoltaic technology for a long term, and his research topics include efficient silicon-based solar cells, new compound film semiconductor material and solar battery, and organic and inorganic hybrid solar cells. He has published nearly 100 papers in journals including Adv. Energ. Mat., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nano Energy, ACS AMI and Appl. Phys. Lett.. He has obtained 12 invention patents authorization, including 1 international patents. Many of his technologies and products has been identified by authoritative bodies at provincial level or above, and applied in industrialization process, which has brought several hundreds of  millions of newly increased output value. Prof. Mai was honored with the title of National Specially-Invited Expert of Thousand Talents Program, Chinese Organization Department, and innovation team leader of Hebei Giants Plan, and gained Hebei May 4th Youth Medal.

ABSTRACT

Human's demand for energy increases day by day at present. As chemical fuel including coal, oil and natural gas causes environmental pollution and global warming that influence people's survival and development at a large extent, we have to find alternative energy that is clean and has rich sources. As a result, photovoltaic technology gains much attention. In the past over 10 years, the conversion efficiency of solar battery has increased gradually, its cost has decreased, and new materials and technologies has constantly appeared. So photovoltaic technology has become an important power supplier in power network. At the same time, as photovoltaic technology is unstable, the mass size output of photovoltaic technology become an urgent issue to be solved. What's more, the rapid development of the Internet of things, wearable device, electric vehicle and UAV technology also provide new application directions as well as challenges for photovoltaic technology. This report will focus on the technical status, development directions and challenges of solar battery and photovoltaic power systems.
