ABOUT RICHARD A. FLAVELL

Richard A. Flavell is a member of National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the Royal Society of the United Kingdom, Dean of Department of Immunology of Medical School at Yale University, a researcher of Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Honorary Director of International Immunology Center of JNU's Institute of Biomedical Transformation, and Overseas Academic Master of JNU's 111 Project. He gained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Hull in 1967 and Ph.D in Biochemistry in 1970. Later he performed postdoctoral work in Amsterdam with Piet Borst and in Zurich with Charles Weissmann for one year. Before accepting his current position of Dean of Department of Immunology at Yale University when the department was set up in the summer of 1988, Dr. Flavell was first Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam (1974-79); then Head of the Laboratory of Gene Structure and Expression at the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London (1979-82); and subsequently President and Chief Scientific Officer of Biogen Research Corporation, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Flavell has published more than 500 quality papers in leading journals of life science like NCS, of which one paper has been cited up to 1013 times at most. He is a world-known molecular biologist and immunologist with his total impact factors reaching 13096 scores.

Flavell has cultivated numerous immunologist for China, and co-constructed several international joint laboratories with China. His postdoctoral students Dong Chen and Li Hua-bing has returned home and participated in scientific research, and others like Chi Hong-bo, Li Ming, Wan Yi-song, and Lu Bing has became well-known immunologist home and abroad. Prof. Flavell has established long-term cooperation with Prof. Yin Zhinan. They has supervised 3 post doctorates and 2 graduates together, and has made plentiful achievements.
