INTRODUCTION
With the explosive growth of data in industrial community and scientific community, big data technology and application draw more public attention. How to analyze big data and dig their potential value become scientific issues worth in-depth exploration. As a new phase of artificial intelligence, computational intelligence, innovated by natural and human wisdom, is the joint name of the method designed to solve complex issues. Computational intelligence, an effective method to solve complex issues in scientific research and engineering practice, has a striking feature that it needn't build precise mathematical or logical model of problem itself, or rely on knowledge representation or reasoning, but processes inputted information directly based on observed data. This feature is suitable for the problems in big data analysis which are difficult to be dealt or are insolvable by building effective formal model or traditional technology. Computational intelligence is an important research field of artificial intelligence and information technology and has enormous potential in its application to big data analysis. A large and innovative arithmetic challenge and application contest in big data and artificial intelligence field – the fifth "CCF Big Data and Computational Intelligence Contest", is to be held by China Computer Federation faced to the need of key industries and application fields of big data, guided by advanced technology and industry application of big data and aimed at facilitating industrial development and upgrading. The contest had been held successfully for four consecutive sessions. It attracted wide pubic attentions and gained good effects and response, with many famous enterprises from home and abroad supporting it and participating in it and more than 6000 teams from prestigious universities and instates at home and abroad. Aimed at hot issues in the theory and application of big data and computational intelligence, four young talents respectively from University of Birmingham, Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology and Guangdong University of Technology are invited to share their research achievements and deliver brilliant reports. This forum consists of four reports, with each report having 40 minutes' speech and 5 minutes' questions and answers.
