School of International Studies/Academy of Overseas Chinese Studies
In 1927, Jinan University set up the Department of Nanyang Culture and Education, which gathered talented scholars to conduct systematic research on Southeast Asia and Overseas Chinese Studies. It not only became the largest research institution on Southeast Asian and overseas Chinese studies, with the most research achievements and most distinguished reputation in Chinese modern history, but also had significant influence in the world. After Jinan University was re-founded in Guangzhou in 1958, Southeast Asian and overseas Chinese studies continued to be highly valued and further developed. These two research areas significantly represent Jinan University’s two unique characteristics as “University of Overseas Chinese.” Then, in 2011, to build an innovative research platform with special characteristics of overseas Chinese studies, the School of International Studies and Academy of Overseas Chinese Studies (SIS/AOCS) at Jinan University was established, integrating international relations, overseas Chinese studies and related research areas. The school is gaining reputation with original research and has made great achievements in discipline construction, academic exchange and personnel training.
