“First there was Jinan, and then there was the Department of Commerce.” As early as 1918, Jinan Academy at Nanjing had courses in commerce. During the Shanghai era, famous economists like Ma Yinchu, Wang Yanan and Chen Biaoru taught at Jinan. In 1980, the College of Economics was established as one of the earliest economics colleges approved by the Ministry of Education. In the discipline evaluation ranking conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2012, the discipline of applied economics ranked 10th and statistics ranked 20^th in the country.

Providing a complete range of academic disciplines and equipped with a strong faculty, the College of Economics has significant influence and renown, both at home and abroad -- especially in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
