The first impression that Gao Hao makes is that he is approachable, gentle and frugal. Although just over 40, Gao is director of JNU Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Natural Medicine; branch secretary and head of the Department of Chinese Pharmacy; and a member of JNU's academic committee. He also serves as deputy director of the Guangdong key laboratory of the pharmacodynamics of traditional Chinese medicine and innovative medicine research and the Guangdong Provincial Disease Susceptibility and Guangdong Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine Manufacturing Technology. Gao studied at Shenyang Pharmaceutical University and officially joined the Communist Party of China in June 1999. Of his Shenyang years, which deeply influenced him, he said: “I have always missed that period of persistence and endeavor. I could not achieve such an achievement without the spirit of the Party.”
At JNU, Gao was named excellent class teacher when he was in charge of the 2010 undergraduate class in pharmacy, whose many honors included Guangdong May Fourth Red Flag Group Branch, JNU first 5A Excellence Class, JNU Advanced Class and JNU May Fourth Red Flag Group.

The team was nominated for the collective award of the Guangdong Youth May Fourth Medal; national second prize of Science and Technology Progress; second prize of Science and Technology from the Ministry of Education; and the first prize from Guangdong province. It has made significant contributions to the construction of pharmacy as a double-first discipline.
Gao has been selected as a pioneer of scientific and technological innovation in the National 10,000 Talents Program, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation of the National Natural Science Foundation and a Young Chang Jiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education. He has also won the Young and Middle-Aged Innovative Talents Award of the China Association of Chinese Medicine, the Servier Youth Pharmaceutical Chemistry Award, the Yiling Biopharmacy Youth Award of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and the Ding Ying Science and Technology Award of Guangdong.
As a person who likes to ponder, I want my students to think more by asking them why, Gao said. Starting with the cultivation of curiosity for knowledge, I activate their interest in learning, a person's necessary quality. Admitting his strictness with students, he said, The strict yet useful requirement will help students make progress rapidly. The key for a teacher to guide his students is whether they can point out the problems, tell their students effective research methods, and take actions without talking too much.”
